Island Salad has finally opened on 22 East 125th Street and the New York Times went over the details yesterday in their City Room
section. The owner Milo Meed (center with cap) wanted healthier options than the fast food and chain restaurants that seem to proliferate uptown. As a father of an 11 year old son, Mr. Meed understood the need to provide healthier choices for the families in Harlem. Unable to sway some healthier restaurants to move above 96th Street, he decided to open Island Salad. Another commendable player in this story is the landlord Nina Day, who reduced the rent so that a quality business could take over an empty space. If more property owners discounted their retail spaces to better businesses, then this would make the neighborhoods more desirable and increase the value of their residential spaces. A good point to note in these tough times. Read more in the NY Times article: LINK. Photo by Benjamin Samuels
Thanks for this post. I went by last night to try it. Salad was super fresh and the staff was friendly. This is a great addition to the neighborhood. Hope all your Harlem readers patronize this place and keep it in business!
