☞ BESPOKE: Rams Head Handrails
The preserved brownstones one block east of Morningside Park never ceases to amaze. We had a feature on the cast iron rails in the past and found the less costly version with a little bit of an upgrade on West 121st Street between Manhattan and Morningside Avenue. There's a cast iron ram's head finial at the end of the rails of the south side brownstone which represents one of the last complete sets on the block. A couple of the other buildings have the same scrolled cast iron rails but the ends are either missing this detail or have on one left on them. We are not sure if they are original to the houses or were updates added on in later times but they definitely are a standout. The closest subway to this location is the A,B,C,D at 125th Street. Agreed, I am an admirer of these blocks off Morningside Park, especially the outstanding iron work including window guards (seen above) and basement gates, the work of a real artisan.
