REMEMBER: THE LANGSTON HUGHES HOUSE CIRCA 1940




Harlem Bespoke: We have written a lot about the Langston Hughes House at at 20 East 127th Street over the years but never pulled up an archival photo.  The above historic images from the city files show the matching brownstones on the block between Fifth Avenue and Park a few year before the Harlem poet would reside within on the top floor as his workspace.

☞ ARCHITECTURE: Ornate Harlem Brownstones

Harlem Bespoke: Downtown Manhattan has a lot of townhouses in the more simple styles since they were built much earlier in the 19th century but by the time Harlem was developed, things became a little more ornate. Walking around the West Village, one will notice mostly brick Federal and Greek Revival houses or Italianate brownstones which have lost some of their original facade details.

DWELL: JULIA FOX BUYS HARLEM BROWNSTONE

Harlem Bespoke:  We have been following the sale of this notable brownstone over the past few months now the local papers have reported that downtown celebrity Julia Fox has made the big purchase to move uptown. 

The apparent 2-family brownstone at 102 West 123rd Street went up on the market for $3.65 $2.99 million asking price last fall and now has a contract out as of the last week of February. This impressive 20-foot-wide corner landmark townhouse in the historic district has some expensive upgrades inside and there appears to be two duplexes set up since two kitchens are within the floor plans.
