☞ ARCHITECTURE: CUNY New Science Center
The new CUNY Advanced Science and Reasearch Center has been progressing in the past month and the first level is starting to appear. That huge red construction crane can be seen by everyone who lives in South or West Harlem since it sits on top of St. Nicholas Park and 133rd Street. In the design images (click to enlarge), the curved road to the far left corner is St. Nicholas Park's top wall at the highest point in the park (St. Nicholas Terrace). Flad Architects/Kohn Pedersen Fox are managing the $300 million building that will feature new facilities containing state-of-the-art labs and classrooms. The completion date is set for 2012 based on the CUNY site: LINK. It's yet to be seen if the new building will look aesthetically pleasing on top of the park but it does get some points for its innovative mirror image curves. The nearest subway is the 1 train at 137th Street. Current photos by Ulysses.

This is a great addition to the neighborhood and just like Columbia's expansion will help increase jobs available in our community.
ReplyDeleteWhat a missed opportunity. These buildings could have brought activity and street life to St. Nicholas Terrace by opening up to the street and the park. This would have gone a long way to restoring the Terrace to the status its designers envisioned - a lively pedestrian mall overlooking the Harlem plain. Instead they place their entrances inward and present a long impenetrable wall (which I'm sure will be bristling with security cameras) to the park, replicating disastrous urban design decisions we've seen far too often in relation to this neighborhood's parks. Just look at Columbia's East Campus dorm for another unfortunate example. KPF and CCNY, I thought you'd do better.
