The north side of Morningside Park between Morningside Avenue and Amsterdam just received a retro make-over of sorts. All of the old aluminum street lights (lower photo) on that section of 123rd Street have now been completely replaced with period appropriate, black enameled, embossed lamp posts. The city probably wanted to add a little more charm on the street surrounding Morningside Park and they definitely will get no arguments here on a job well done. We need these around St. Nicholas Park as well. How was this done? Great idea and adds so much to the community.
ReplyDeleteThis might be something to discuss at the community board meetings. Probably has something to do with city funds that get allocated for neighborhood improvement.
ReplyDeleteI always admired these street lamps on Lenox Ave., great to see the city is replacing the aluminum ones with these beauties. I expect they cost a little more but are much more attractive, money well spent. Now how can we request them elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteThese antique looking lamp posts are suited for streets and boulevards with superior housing stock i.e. brownstone blocks.
ReplyDeleteI've also seen new ones by Hancock Park on 123rd. They offer a classy aesthetic. Who knew that such a small improvement would pack a big punch.
ReplyDeleteIt is probably a good idea to join Friends of Morningside Park or Friends of St. Nicholas Park if you live around there. I am sure they have influence on the beautification of the surrounding neighborhoods.
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing this out. I walk past that everyday and saw that they took out the old lamppost everyday and saw that they were replacing it, but I didn't notice today that it was actually replaced with a much nicer one.
