☞ DRINK: One Bar DOB Hearing Pending

Everyone was waiting for the new One Bar to open sometimes in late fall of 2009 but then the DOB slapped a stop work order on the establishment sometimes in October. The landmark shopfront, in the Mount Morris Park Historic District, is on the corner of 120th Street and Lenox, which was the former space of a caviar bar (of all things) and folks were really excited to see something more plausible arrive in the nabe. So what's going on currently? This Thursday, May 13th is the big DOB date for the owner to review the "work without permit" issue (the original expired during the renovations) and hopefully they can get it all resolved in a timely manner. 1. Wine bar is better than a caviar bar, and I will definitely try it if this opens. But why not a pub with good burgers instead? Seems more accessible to me. Or a thai or sushi place .... or a diner???

Regardless it's housed in a beatiful building.

  2. Would like another restaurant not a bar.

  3. A reader just informed us that the owner of One Bar just gave up the lease last week and that it will not be opening. Anyone else out there have any updates?

  4. Man that's discouraging, I was looking forward to this place opening up. Especially is I don't think The Den is ever going to reopen now.

On the other hand, that nabe needs a pub or a lounge/bar, not another winebar.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the coming Hotel Aloft and it's in house loungebar. The business folk around here seeem really fond of the captive audience concept and really spooked by competition.

  5. That is unfortunate. Really is.
Hopefully someone else picks up the lease and considers opening a burger joint/pub like Green Girl says.

  6. The Gastropub thing is really happening downtown. A bar with decent food and sensible prices could be the way to go.

  7. Yes - please a good pub! I keep waiting for the beer garden on FDB. I passed by the soon to open Chocolat yesterday and the sign said restaurant/lounge. There seem to be a lot of lounges already.

  8. I do think something that was open at night - until at least midnight - would be really nice for the block, and a pub with good burgers, salads, and soups would be great. It could serve brunch on weekends and dinner 7 days a week. Would do it myself if I didn't have a baby + husband + full time job!!!

  9. I am really curious to see what will happen.

Especially now, since the storefronts on 170 Lenox (@ 119th Street) are available as well. This is such a nice area with Settepani, Grandma's Place and Il Caffee Latte.

A friendly pub or dinner would be great....still hoping for a good hardware/household store in 170 Lenox.

  10. Storefronts north of 125th on lenox will command higher prices. It seems like that's where all the action is. Doesn anyone else agree or disagree?

Does anyone have an update on Wild Olive Market?

  11. How about a nice bar where I can go and watch the game on TV and have a nice burger?

I have no idea why Thai and sushi places haven;t opened!!!!

  12. anon 1:55pm

I hope that the action is seeing that there are a couple of nice storefronts to have on 120/119th @ Lenox besides all the other great Harlem hot spots and when it has a moment it could take a look and get something going here...sounds like burgers would be a success! What about a Metro Diner like place?

  13. The interior work at Wild Olive Market is at full steam - I pass by everyday...but I'm not sure about their projected opening date.

  14. Sushi won't work anywhere in Harlem yet...generally speaking, not many people eat that stuff.

  15. Not sure I agree there wouldn't be sufficient demand for a sushi + Asian restaurant. At any rate, at least Best Yet makes fresh sushi on premises for when we need a fix...

  16. There's more than enough cheepo Chinese take-out places in Harlem. I would be first in line for a real sushi restaurant.

  17. The department of health recommends cooking all meat thoroughly...but lions seem to like it.

  18. Um, I like sushi and live in Harlem.

  19. I like sushi too & live in Harlem. And Pete, Best Yet sushi is made fresh in the morning then refridgerated. Don't eat after 3/4pm! Made that mistake & caught food poisining.
