☞ SHOP: Details on MMPHD Farmers' Market
We were notified late yesterday that the Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association had calendared a discussion last night on the topic of a farmer's market to be set up along West 124th Street and 5th Avenue (photo). The Mount Morris Park Historic District Farmers' Market will be on the north side of Marcus Garvey Park and will be sponsored by a group called Harvest Homes which provides "increased access to fresh, good quality, affordable and locally grown produce, encourages cultural activities and information exchange, and provides part-time employment and micro-enterprise business opportunities for neighborhood residents and youth." Did anyone attend? When will this market officially open? Based on the sponsor's website, they have a couple of East Harlem locations set up for mid July. See more on the Harvest Homes site: LINK. Yes, I did attend and the market will officially open on Saturday, July 10th at Marcus Garvey Park from 8 AM to 4 PM.
ReplyDeleteGreat news, this will be a welcome addition to the park and neighborhood, kudos to MMPCIA excellent work. Remember, use it or lose it.
ReplyDeleteAnon, how was it? This is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteNice! But we need to make sure that the NYPD is doing all that they can to address the recent violence in the park.
ReplyDeleteMark your calendars now - July 7th at 6:30pm is the next Community Council Meeting at the 28th Precinct...we need to attend and let our voices be heard! Protect our neighborhood!
Correction, the next Community Council Meeting at the 28th Precinct(2271-89 8th Ave., New York, NY, 10027 (212) 678-1611) will be held on July 14th at 6:30pm.
ReplyDeleteI like all these Farmer's Markets popping up. Hopefully they will all make it. Spread the word!
ReplyDeletei think this market started last year-though just one day. they didnt really have anything decent for sale, but there were a lot of companies there offering samples, like an indian food company that was launching a new brand at local markets.
ReplyDeleteI think the 28th precinct community meetings are on hiatus for July and August.
ReplyDeleteReferring to the comment posted at 11:44 AM, this is the first official market proposed in the park proposed by the Mt. Morris Morris Park Community Improvement Association (MMPCIA). Therefore, we had nothing to do with the market indicated. In fact, I was present that day. It was a great event and I enjoyed it.
ReplyDeletesorry i didnt mean to imply it was a bad event, just not what i have come to expect from a farmers market. i wasnt sure if it was affiliated with this new market, so thanks for clearing that up.
ReplyDelete11:58 - do you know why the 28th precinct community meetings have been postponed?
ReplyDeleteDidn't Wild Olive Market, literally around the corner from the park, solve this problem? I kind of feel like a dollar I would spend at this farmer market would be a dollar I am not spending with a quality business owner that took a risk and made a real commitment and investment in the community. Sure, it's heart warming, the whole notion of buying produce at an Urban Farmer's Market, but methinks the community is better off focusing on making Wild Olive Market successful. Their produce is top notch, perhaps even local too!
ReplyDelete3:35pm - True. Wild Olive Market's investment and committment cannot be understated.
ReplyDeleteI don't know...as this is only once a week I think the impact on Wild Olive Market would be minimal. I would also like to think that there is enough demand out there for fresh produce that the two will co-exist and thrive quite happily. Make that three when/if Whole Foods opens. I used to frequent the Union Square farmer's market and that seems to exist quite happily surrounded by Whole Foods and various other options. Good point though.
ReplyDeleteChris-im not sure there is high enough demand. wild olive seems pretty slow when i've been there. i find myself buying things i dont really need to try to boost their bottom line-as if my one little item would have that kind of impact.
ReplyDeleteFYI - as someone else wrote - the 28th precinct community council meetings are on hiatus for July and August and will resume September (2nd Wednesday of the month). - oni
ReplyDeleteWild Olive is doing just fine! Jeez. And I noticed tonight that they are carrying "local" produce. It's a wonderful addition to the neighborhood--as is a weekly farmers market.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if Wild Olive is doing just fine. Margins are razor thin in the grocery business and therefore is based on volume sales. I agree that like businesses often prosper in close proximity but I've waited long enough for a quality storefront grocery, I'll spend my $$ there!
