The non-profit Street Squash located at 40 West 116th Street engages public school student in grades 6-12 and introduces the sports but also focuses half of their time on tutoring along with college prep. All students who stick with the program have ended up going to college and mentors even check up with them in those latter academic years. 1. This is a great program. It's kind of a subversive way of getting Harlem kids into topnotch colleges. They teach inner-city kids - mostly black and latino - an upperclass (in the US) sport like squash and help them achieve good grades and test scores. Presto - they are very attractive candidates for top-rate colleges looking to get diverse, smart students who can help their squash teams.

  2. And StreetSquash is always looking for volunteers to help tutor kids. Plus they built the best squash courts in NYC (in the Kalahari building).
