☞ REMEMBER: Randall's Island circa 1882
A photo from 1882 shows the New York House of Refuge that would have been visible across the river from the shores of East Harlem. The House of Refuge might look like a European estate on the water but actually was for juvenile delinquents and many of the other institutions on the island consisted of asylums that separated the ills of society from the mainland. By the 1930s, all of the buildings would be razed for public athletic fields and parks along with being connected to the outer boroughs by a couple of bridges. A modern image can found here: LINK.
