☞ SHOP: Vinateria Arriving at The Gateway

The Gateway Tower condo at 2098 FDB/8th Avenue apparently will have one less empty storefront in the near future.  This past week saw a review of a new businesses at the local community board and an establishment called the Vinateria was up for review for this part of South Harlem.  Society Coffee just closed on the north corner and there is an empty commercial space just mid block between 113th and 114th Street so the new business should provide a bit more needed retail activity.  With a name like Vinateria, we are guessing that either another wine shop is opening or the new establishment will be a wine bar of some sort.

  1. I live in this building....two women came by a few weeks ago asking residents to sign a petition to open a wine bar. Many of us signed it and were excited about the idea. However, some residents are very concerned about the noise, late hours, etc. because they have young children, so they were trying to get people to sign a petition against it. It's not clear to me what will end up happening with this.'

  2. How does one petition for a wine bar? I mean, call me crazy, but don't you need somebody to want to open the thing? That said I'd be happy to see a wine bar. I'm not sure I associate wine bars with lots of noise but that's just me.

  3. More the merrier. Although, there will be a few bars in this immediate location. Hopefully enough people and business to go round.

  4. GG sorry I wasn't clear in my original comment - the women petitioning to open it were the owners of the business. They wanted the signatures of residents in the building so that they could show the community board that they were welcome in the building. Again many of us did sign but there is also some resistance in the building. Apparently the folks that live directly above where the business would be have a toddler, so they are very concerned. We'll see what happens!
