ARCHITECTURE: COMBINING TWO BROWNSTONES
The trend that appears to be happening with developers now in Harlem since there is limited land to build on is basically to combine two brownstones together to make one larger building. This can be seen on West 126th Street now right behind the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building. Number 159 West 126th seems to be doing a good job with trying to keep things contextual as shown in the sketch above but the neighbor next door is a different story: LINK
This mirror image situation is rather interesting because it does show that developers have it in their budgets to choose modern or contextual based on what they think is the better selling point here. Our opinion is that if one wants modern, then a high rise situation is better option than a classic brownstone block.

Combining brownstones allows for a better apartment layout. Good to see the developer is keeping the traditional facade.
ReplyDeleteWow, look at the amount of construction, restoration, renovation on that half block. Fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThese are hot blocks, close to the subway, whole foods (under construction) and many restaurants including Red Rooster so they are attracting much attention from developers.
DeleteSince I live on this block -- I'm delighted!
