SHOP: CHAIN RESTAURANTS LESS POPULAR IN HARLEM
A Bespoke tip came in today which might just indicate be the beginning of the end of the chain restaurant trend in Harlem. Papa John's on Lenox and 126th Street shut down a year or so ago and it appears that an artisan pizzeria will be its replacement. There was a time not so long ago uptown that all of the traditional local businesses like M&G or Copeland's pretty much shuttered because cheaper restaurant chains were a more affordable option for a Harlem that was getting even tighter on economics. Now with more diversity in the neighborhood, it appears that smaller boutique businesses have a chance to start up since the next generation of Harlem residents prefer the boutique businesses the city has to offer. Manhattan's first Checkers Burgers also shuttered on West 125th Street some time ago so maybe things are finally turning around for mom and pop type of startups.
