READ: A CARRIAGE HOUSE ON WEST 122ND STREET

The Columbia Spectator has public a typical story on the communities efforts to landmark some of the historic structures uptown and provides some insight on the difficulties faced in doing so.  A rare Victorian carriage house on the block of West 122nd Street close to 7th Avenue was a former church but all of the founding parties of the parish have since passed away and the property has been abandoned for years.  Neighbors are fearful of developers destroying the building once sold and making the address an official New York City landmark would guarantee protection.

There is one problem with this scenario.  Since the property owner has a big say in a landmark designation, they must first be found but many are basically resistant to the idea of protection because some of the potential property buyers are more interested in the actual land than restoring an old building.  We then have a quote from one notable Harlem historian and the article concludes basically with a resolve that not much can be done here by preservationist: LINK
