☞ BESPOKE: Jumel Terrace Books

While on the subject of Sylvan Terrace, let's mention the only bookstore we can call "bespoke" in Harlem. The Jumel Terrace bookstore is located in a brownstone that also doubles as a bed and breakfast. The owner, Kurt Thometz, handpicked the entire selection of rare, antiquarian books on African, American, colonial, and revolutionary histories along with various ephemera. Book signing and events are often scheduled but to see the library, one must rely on "serendipity or invitation." That is, make an appointment or stick your head in to see if it's open. The address is on 426 West 160th Street between St. Nicholas and Edgecomb Avenues. Tel. (212)928-9525. Take the C, 155 or 163rd Street. Website: jumelterracebooks.com
