☞ PROTECT: Harlem Subways

Another little-known fact about Harlem is that it probably has three of the best kept subway stations in New York City. As everyone
knows and constantly complains about, most of Manhattan stations are a terrible wreck and even worse in Brooklyn and Queens.

However, riding the 1 line after 96th street offers a rare view of the underground transportation system as it once was. Starting at the 103rd Street stop, continuing to 110th Street and finishing at 116th Street are three subway stations in a row that have been completely restored to their original design. Gone are the chipped tiles or even worse, the 70's and 80's tiles seen mostly downtown. Replaced are, yes, subway tiles along with the original Heins and LaFarge hand-made tiles featuring painted subway station numbers and decorative moulding. Each station has a different color theme and are even well-lit with updated lighting. Really beautiful for those who want to see what the subways looked like when the system was new.

Take subway line number 1 uptown and check out the neighborhood sights labeled at the sidebar under West Harlem.
