☞ PROTECT: Harlem Synagogues

There are very few examples of Harlem's Jewish past left in Harlem. Of these, the most fascinating is the synagogue hidden on Old Broadway in Manhattanville. This New York City landmark is still in operation and, in 2003, restored its stained glass windows to their original glory (see top photo) with the help of the Landmarks Preservation Committee. The other major temples have been converted into churches. The Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, shown in the second photo, is probably one of the most majestic former synagogues and is an example of how historic buildings can be adapted, rather than destroyed, in changing times.
