☞ WALK: 125th Street Train Station

Harlem's 125 Street Train Station has gone through a transformation that embodies what is happening in Harlem these days. Once neglected, the pivotal northern station had deteriorated to almost a shell like existence when Metro North decided to renovate the 1897 structure in the mid 1990's. Therefore, 100 years later, the station was not only restored, but replicated piece by piece along the Park Avenue track. The station under the track had a total gut replication in wood paneling, tiles and period light fixtures along with the exterior moulding, trim, tile work and a fresh coat of paint. The middle photo shows the landmarked, Corn Exchange Building in its deteriorated state of which many view as a hopeless case for restoration. As shown by the 125th Street Station example and also that of Harlem proper, re-awakenings happen quite often in this former, sleepy part of town. 125th Street and Park Avenue. Take the 2,3 or 4,5,6 to 125th Street.
