☞ DWELL: Cheap Rents in Hamilton Heights
This Saturday's New York Times had a great article on cheap rents in the city that really touched upon the subject that Harlem is not such a bad place to live. It seems that this time of year is when college graduates look for their first rentals as adults, and many are finding that Harlem is a great option. The article interviews a group of Teach For America teachers who pay $750 a month each to share a large three-bedroom apartment in Hamilton Heights. A classic quote includes a young 24 year-old first-time teacher from North Carolina who said, “Initially I was unsure about Harlem, because you don’t hear the best things about it as an outsider,” but was later quoted in saying, “I feel safer here than I would at York and 81st,” she said, “because there are so many people out here on the streets, even at 2 or 3 in the morning.” Read more of the article, "Not a Dive After All," in the New York Times: LINK and our previous post on Hamilton Heights: LINK
