☞ REMEMBER: Morningside Heights

This post card of the Columbia campus circa 1900 is also a glimpse of Morningside Heights and West Harlem during the time period. Notice the expanse of land to the north with Grant's Tomb on the hill, Mayor Tiemann's white house to the right of it (today's Tiemann Place) and the long-gone Claremont Inn as the grey building on the hill before the viaduct. Oh yeah, let's not forget that big gas tank in the far distance that we talked about in the past post: LINK. Click on image to enlarge. Take the 1 train to 116th Street to see this area of town today.

  1. Are those trams traveling south on Amsterdam Avenue in the bottom right corner of the picture? Again, thanks for such an informative blog.

  2. Yes, that is Amsterdam Avenue. A reference I initially thought of but did not get to. Great to have you back.
