☞ EAT: Tom's Restaurant

Up the hill, by Columbia University, might be the planet's most recognizable diner. Tom's Restaurant's only competition was the Moondance Diner in Tribeca, but -- alas -- that institution's land was sold and the diner ended up getting trucked to Wyoming last year. Tom's is a Columbia hangout and can get crowded on weekend mornings but still remains reliable and cheap for the neighborhood. This is the one place to bring visiting family to take a peek, since most probably never thought it actually existed. The interior is not the same as you might recall from its television appearances and don't expect to be wowed by the food...it's just basic diner fare. 2880 Broadway between 111th Street and 112th Street. Take the 1 train to 110th Street.
