☞ REMEMBER: West 128th Street Circa 1938

At the junction of West 128th Street and Convent Avenue lies a corner parking lot at a dead end street. What was originally on this industrial-looking road stop at the western borders of central Harlem? The corner house for sale had us wondering if there had always been an open lot or not. The top photo, circa 1938, shows the Mother's Friend Laundry facility and a couple of shacks on south side of 128th street and a factory building on the north. From the lower photo, one is peering down at the same scene today from the top of Convent Avenue where 128th Street stops into a hillside (128th street continues on the west side of the avenue, but the two ends do not meet at Convent). The factory buildings are still there, but the shacks have been gone for some time now. All that remains today is a big old parking lot for the Verizon phone company. Photo courtesy of NYPL.
