☞ READ: Malcolm Shabazz Market in the Times
The New York Times reports on costume designer Marina Draghichi, who also worked on the film Precious, in her research for the Broadway production of Fela!. Seeking to recreate the 1970s dance club looks from the setting of Lagos in Nigeria, Ms. Draghichi headed out to Harlem's own African Bazaar, the Malcolm Shabazz Market. The article also has a great slide show of the traditional costume and goods to be found while perusing the stall at this unique ethnic outlet on 116th Street. Read more about the process of creating costumes for a show in yesterday's NY Times: LINK. The Malcolm Shabazz Market is on West 116th Street between Lenox Avenue and 5th Avenue. The nearest subway is the 2,3 train at 116th Street. Photo by Ulysses
