☞ REMEMBER: Carmansville's Last Cottages
Another photo of the outskirts of Hamilton Heights and Carmansville in the 1930's shows what might have been the last vestige of any wood frame houses in the area. Usually associated with the mid 19th century Civil War Era, these types of houses would become more rare when new wood frame constructions would eventually be outlawed in cities since they were more susceptible to fires. The lower photo shows the north corner of West 152nd and St. Nicholas Avenue today. Needless to say, the older houses with their porches and front yards added a bit more character on the block than the poured concrete that exist now. It's a shame that nothing has been built on the land since the underused corner makes a bland statement on an otherwise distinct part of town. Archival photo courtesy of NYPL
