☞ READ: Underperforming Costco Cuts Jobs
After a lackluster Holiday season, the Costco at the East River Plaza will be laying off 160 of its 453 employees. The promise of job was a key point with the East Harlem community to allow having the huge construction project in their backyards and the 142 employees who live in the immediate area are now unsure if they will be part of the layoffs. The original promise of job security was apparently temporary when many found out that their positions were seasonal after the retailer opened. Target is scheduled to open this summer with the same promise of jobs, so the situation could get better or worse in the next few months.
