☞ INTRODUCING: The New MGP Amphitheater

The new designs for the Marcus Garvey Park Amphitheater by the Mount Morris Park Historic District have been revealed. The architectural firm Cooper, Robertson & Partners will improve the old 1969 bandshell with much needed shade, improved sight lines and a brand new stage house. The new canopies will provide cover for over 1,600 spectators, the larger stage will make performances visible at multiple angles and the existing bench seating will be replaced with recycled materials. 1. Truly brilliant! First Diddy is going to Crystal Palace and how this. How's that for a morning? haha.

Do we know if this is going to happen for certain (funding approved etc...)

  2. This renovation is funded by the Parks Department and the completion date is 2010 so it is a done deal.

  3. Too bad they built this thing the way they did in the very first place. That blue roof makes the park look like its added a pep boys franchise or something. They had the hill right there. Imagine how attractive would be an amphitheatre built into the side of the hill, a la Red Rocks in Colorado or any classic Greek theatre. Alas we are stuck with a visual blight on what once must haqve been a beautiful park...

  4. Hopefully this doesn't increase the footprint of the theater... MGP needs more grass-- I'd like more lawn area for picnics and just lying in the grass and socializing.

  5. They should convert the blue roof of the community center to glass so they are not so heavy looking. That roof takes up so much of the visual space of the park.

  7. Agreed the neighborhood surrounding Marcus Garvey Park is really moving now. It's beautiful and managages to keep much of it's history. This will only add to the area.
