☞ WALK: Dumpster Day at 844 St. Nicholas
The tall five-story building at 844 St. Nicholas Avenue, between 152nd and 153rd Street is ready for renovations (white house in photo). The distinct property, which is an official New York City landmark, closed at the end of last year and we noticed one of the tallest dumpsters we have ever seen out front yesterday. Workers were running in out out with loads of what appears to be old plaster. This is probably a gut renovation and it doesn't seem like any of the original details will be saved. Based on recent DOB filings, the property was an SRO and is in the process of converting into a two family home. There's over 5,000 square feet in the 21 foot wide townhouse so the new spaces should be pretty nice. Read more about this building in our original post: LINK. The closest subway to this location is the C train at 155th Street. Photo by Ulysses

My friend is the previous owner of that place and I've been through it twice. It was already mostly gutted - if they're taking out substantially more then they're ripping into original details and it's pretty sad. It was a grand old place with big huge rooms...
ReplyDeleteOne point of curiosity is that Calvin Butts lives in the brownstone just to the left.
What a beautiful row of buildings.
ReplyDeleteI actually know the Contractor David at Dynamic Restoration, who did a great gut renovation job for my landmark brownstone while saving all details. He said they will try to do the same thing here, in that to save and restore the originals......
