☞ REMEMBER: The Ferdinand Estate circa 1880

Harlem's 125th Street has always been the main street for the uptown neighborhood, but there used to be some residential houses along the commercial strip up until the late 19th century. We found this photo of Dr. John E. Ferdinand's estate at 230 West 125th Street (west of 7th Avenue), circa 1880, and it displays an impressive wood frame mansion with a cast iron fence around its perimeter. In later years, Blumstein Department Store would eventually rise up in two incarnations on the property site starting from 1898. Today, the department store still stands but Touro College has taken over the facility in recent years (lower image). The closest station to this location is the A,B,C,D or the 2,3 at 125th Street.
