Monday, June 21st, 6:30 PM at the Museum of the City of New York. The Museum celebrates Pride Week 2010 with the opening night of Maysles Cinema's second annual Homo Harlem film series featuring a screening of The Polymath, or, The Life and Opinions of Samuel R. Delany, Gentleman directed by Fred Barney Taylor. Raised in Harlem, Samuel R. Delany is an award winning science fiction writer whose numerous credits also include penning several episodes of the Wonder Woman comic book. Using a range of experimental techniques and borrowed footage from Delany's home movies, Taylor captures his subject's thoughts on racism, violence and his struggles with sexual identity. Following the screening, Homo Harlem Film Festival curator Michael Henry Adams will conduct a discussion with Samuel R. Delany and Fred Barney Taylor.
This week-long event investigates the cinematic representation of gay life and culture in black America's fabled homeland. Delany is a legend -- I'll be there! Hopefully, it will also spur more gays to consider Harlem as a desirable residence!
ReplyDeleteMan. Mr. Delaney's HOGG novel is one that requires steel nerves and a cement stomach to get through. I couldn't get past page 44.
