☞ REMEMBER: 100-104 West 124th Street
There is a low-level wood frame building on the north side of West 124th Street (just west of Lenox) that had us wondering if it ever had any character to it. We were able dig up a photo from 1942 (top) and the block did indeed have three somewhat charming, glass storefronts with one being used as a laundry. The cornices and window lintels are also in place and the modest building looked like a shabby country store. Today, the most notable difference is that the first floor has been walled in and some rather uninspiring steps and handrails have been added on. As far as original ornamentations go, there's sadly nothing much here to look at. Click on top image to enlarge. Archival photo courtesy NYPL. Current photo by Ulysses

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act I applaud the proliferation of ramps. On the other hand, damn but that is one ugly building. That clothing store is never open. . . I think the entire building might be vacant—don’t think I’ve ever seen any activity.
