I am looking forward to breaking bread with my friends at Sylvia's on Monday to celebrate 48 years of great service
ReplyDeleteI can proudly say I've not been to Sylvia's since 1996, and then I was forced to for out of town relatives. Speak to longtime Harlemites, Black people with roots in the Carolinas, Georgia, (the South), and you will see they generally consider Sylvia's to be of sub par quality in the context of Soul Food (often 'dog food' is the phrase you will hear). You'll also meet many that have not been there in decades. Basically in a nutshell, ya know how much tasty cred Olive Garden has as Italian cuisine? Well Sylvia's is a Black folks version of Olive Garden. But I give her credit, she is a hustler with paid deals with the tourist bus operators who get a % kick back (smart woman) and the 2 different menus with 2 different prices, one for the locals on "this side" of the restaurant, and a second menu with higher prices (same food) on the banquet side of the restaurant when she's catering to the tourist. Love that! Can you imagine you yourself going on vacation, holiday travel somewhere and learning while dining at a restaurant that you, since you are a tourist, are paying a higher price for the same food as the local person in the same restaurant? But Right On Sylvia, few have done more to clog the arteries of the community than you. 48 years of fried this, gravy that, bacon, all the fatty and greasy foods one can hope for!
