☞ READ: The CU Retail Resolution Vote from CB9
The Columbia Spectator has the Community Board 9 resolution vote in their most recent article about the 7,000 square foot retail space that Columbia has failed to lease out: LINK. Local groups have been hoping to revive the north campus area along Amsterdam in the lower 120's and the University had discussed with the community board that this new building would include retail back in 2000-2001. Reportedly four substantial residential buildings had been demolished on the site decades ago so the discussion has reverted back to the university on the community benefits for this new campus building.
This section of Amsterdam is the transitional area between Morningside Heights to Harlem and a few notably popular restaurants have arrived around the blocks surrounding the controversial School of Social Work ground floor space at 121st Street. Part of the issue stated on the CB9 side is that Columbia's rent demands have been too high and the school has since declined to reveal what the going commercial asking rent is set for at that specific location. The final vote ended up at 29-1 against Columbia so there may be a chance that the retail space might not change into another school facility. For more details on the story, see our past post: LINK
