☞ READ: Earl's Beer & Cheese Bar in East Harlem
New York magazine just had a feature on the new gastropub-ish Earl's Beer & Cheese food bar that opened at the south end of East Harlem four months ago. Located at 1259 Park Avenue and 97th Street (at the point where the train starts to appear above ground) the space is literally just a bar and a single communal table but appears to be worth the visit. Chef Corey Cova formerly served as a Navy submarine cook but has come up with a hip, craft brew spot without the actual hipsters present. The menu which includes "braised pork belly with kimchee and a fried egg on griddle-toasted sourdough" sounds like it came from an edgy East Village joint because Mr. Cova recently had a stint at the popular Momofuku Ssäm Bar and therefore the classic American comfort food has a lot of culinary mashups. Had a beer here a few weeks ago when shopping at Gourmet Garage (staff there had never heard of it). Friendly people, good beer.
