A Daily News article this weekend reports that the Hale House is still around these days and has finally turned the corner from the scandal that rocked the Harlem charity 10 years ago. The above photo shows the brownstone on West 122nd Street where Mother Clara Hale originally took care of abandoned babies during the drug crises several decade ago but charity was not what the institution was known for when the founder's daughter took over.
After her mother's death, Hale's daughter and son-in-law embezzled over a million in funds from the organization and had reportedly housed children in a substandard manner. Jail time was not served but the court ordered the couple to pay a portion of the money back. New leadership in the organization has now set up a preschool further north from the original location and will also open a second branch on 127th Street next year. Read more in the Daily News: LINK

always amazed me that they avoided jail. Such a betrayal of trust.
