☞ READ: A Second Chance at Castle Gardens
Most communities would not be supportive of an 11-story residential building built for ex-convicts that served their time but the community in West Harlem has stood on the side of redemption. This past weekend, the Times looked into the life of the superintendent at Castle Gardens which opened last year for those returning to society after being formerly incarcerated. The $40 million, "green" building located on 625 West 140th Street has 114 affordable rental units altogether and is just around the corner from Riverside Drive. The title of the new construction is a nod towards the nickname of the Fortune Society (lower photo) which is located next door and helped spearhead the project. Those who are involved with West Harlem's Community Board 9 will also be familiar with the old, castle-like halfway house facing the Hudson since many of the monthly meetings are held at the Fortune Society.
