☞ SEE: The Richard Rodgers Amphitheater Debut
Thursday, June 2nd, 11:00 AM, Richard Rodgers Amphitheater Ribbon Cutting at Marcus Garvey Park at West 122nd Street & Mount Morris Park West. The new Richard Rodger Amphitheater at Marcus Garvey Park will be ready for its debut next week as NYC Parks Department Commissioner Adrian Benepe and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer will preside over the official ribbon cutting ceremony. We took the top photo a couple of months back and the outdoor event space named after the composer who grew up around the block was making quick progress. With the arrival of the summer farmers market in the upcoming weeks and this new community space, Marcus Garvey Park should be one of the big attractions this summer for the Mount Morris Park nabe.

Wow..great job finishing it so quickly. This will be a real boon to the park and surrounding neighborhood. Can't wait until they start putting on events.
ReplyDeleteAnd a wonderful tribute to one of America's great composers!
ReplyDeleteIt truly is a job well done! I attended a film event on Friday evening and the African music event on Sunday. Great acoustics, the seating comfortable, and the stage illumination for evening performances looks splendid. So looking forward to the line-up of events!
ReplyDeleteFor those of you interested in the Rodgers connection, why not stroll by the house he grew up at 3 West 120th Street. His father was a doctor with a practice on the ground floor. As many of you no doubt know, 100 years ago it was an upper-middle-class Jewish neighborhood, and the Sulzberger family (of NY Times fame) lived across the street. Not far away were the boyhood homes of Rodgers's eventual collaborators, Larry Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II.
