☞ SHOP: Boutique Business Arrives at Kalahari

The Kalahari between Fifth and Lenox might have sold out completely but the retail frontage facing 116th Street has been having some trouble attracting better businesses until now.  The mixed-income, new construction raised a few eyebrows last year when a 99 cent shop opened by a moderately priced furniture store: LINK. Walking by recently, we noticed that a decent looking hair salon has set up shop which will be the first boutique business to arrive in the South Harlem building.  The fancy men's salon called BBraxton is just one building over so there seems to be a trend on this particular block.  More on the new Simply Hair salon can be found on the following site: LINK

  1. What is the deal with hair salons?! Wouldn't be all that impressed if I lived in this building. Suppose there must be big demand or something.

  2. @Chris:

"What is the deal with hair salons?!"

That...is a separate subject in itself.

But it looks like decent establishment and its better than yet another 99 cent store at any rate.

You'd think they could at least get a Starbuck's or a Blimpie's over there. They've had some horible luck with retail.

  3. Chris, you just outed yourself as 100% Caucasian.

  4. Ha, Sanou's Mum, or 100% straight? I think I get my hair cut three or four times per year ;) Of course, I understand that there is big demand for hair styling/extensions in Harlem, but c'mon, by me there are at least four salons within a 2/3 block radius!

  5. You need your hair taken care of so you look good on Sunday going to one of the many churches. So by my count, there are two hair places on that block and two churches, not counting the one that has been in disrepair for almost two years. And I'm not counting the fake hair place either.

  7. I'm caucasian. And I'm straight. But I'm also exceptional and since Braxton's advertises exceptional grooming for exceptional men, I figured I should take them up on their offer. Now if only the churches offered exceptional religion for exceptional men/women, maybe I'd be tempted to get some.

  9. Fair dos, no problem with most of the hair places (always brings a smile to the face to see people hanging out sharing a bit of banter), but I reckon one or two by me are a little bit dodgy! Seen pretty much every other Chris Rock movie, but will check that one out westsider.

  10. I live in there and can tell you that we were very unhappy with Deals, having said that it is a publicly listed firm and this usually means stability; they have been relatively responsive to any concerns so that attempt to be a good neighbour.

The hair salon, I reserve comment but I do hope they succeed as a revolving retail space is a curse.

Chris, if you are only getting your hair cut 3 times a year might I suggest that you need help lmao!!!

  12. Wanted to dislike Deal$, but must admit I picked up half a dozen boxes of cereal that were cheaper than CostCo. Kept me going for months :) Still quite an odd store.
