UPDATE: DNAINFO HAS CONFIRMED THE INTERIOR NOW HAS ALL THE GLASS REMOVED: LINK. The controversy about the aesthetics of the new wine and liquor store over at the Mount Morris Park Historic District made it to all of the major local media outlets in the past month and now new signs are up. As folks might remember, the old sign had the diamond plate steel store frontage associated with more lower end establishments and the Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association was not having it. A reader sent in a photo of the shop at West 119th Street over the holiday break and now a matte canvas awning has appeared out front.
The Landmarks commission intervened on the facade issue since the building is in a New York City Historic District but interior alterations are usually out of landmark jurisdiction. MMPCIA members also wanted the bullet proof barriers removed since all of the shops and cafes in the immediate area do not have this feature. Check out our original post to see what the store looked like previously: LINK
Looks alright. Improvement over the other sign. Nice to have a liquor store nearby.
ReplyDeleteI am fairly certain the bulletproof plexiglass was removed ... was passing by on a Sunday afternoon a couple of weeks ago and the doors were open. On the inside there was a bunch of shattered glass all over the place so I believe they demoed this out as well.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, did the Auberge Laurent open up on New Year's eve as planned? Anybody go?
ReplyDeleteI was at AL this weekend. The decor is pretty awesome and the staff was great. The people at the bar were attractive. The cheese was excellent, as was the wine I enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have trouble going back often as there is only snack food. They need to Add some tartines, burgers, sandwiches, espresso drinks, teas, etc. Man cannot survive on a bunch of wines and some awesome cheese....
I wish them the best I luck, but I need more food to make me a regular.
that's too bad about the food at auberge laurent. i was hoping it would be more like nectar, where there is enough to make a little meal out of it if you go on an empty stomach.
ReplyDeleteHenry, agreed. Even a limited menu of relatively filling items would be nice. I think it will be tough for them without this ....
ReplyDeleteReading the DNA Info article, it sounds like the community board did a great job in getting the changes through. I'll be visiting this place on a regular basis and it sounds like the board will be directing a lot of their own business through these guys too. Win win for all concerned.
