☞ REMEMBER: Trolley Ride on 125th c. 1946
Photographer Todd Webb document New York City during the post Depression decades and often caught a glimpse of Harlem. The above image was taken in 1949 and shows commuters crossing on 125th Street via trolley. Buses would take over eventually as the main form of cross town public transportation but it would have been wonderful to have kept these running.

Imagine if we were to rebuild trollies, what would that do to encourage pedestrian traffic on such thoroughfares as 125th St.? The question is if it would be possible to reduce the car traffic and improve life for those on foot without offending the balance too much disrupting car culture and the economy???
ReplyDeleteI would love to see trolley cars operating on 125th and other major cross streets, Christine Queen could run for mayor on that platform.
DeleteNow that is a great photo of NY life.
