An image from 1915 shows what the Claremont Theatre at 135th and Broadway used to look like in the days it actually played moving pictures. We are not sure how long The Claremont has been dormant as a public event space but one can see from the lower photo that this local West Harlem landmark is used just for storage today. ReplyDeleteThe Claremont ceased showing movies in 1933 according to its Cinema Treasures entry. It has served several uses since then: automobile showroom, clothing store, furniture store, storage space, and now a pediatric clinic.
ReplyDeleteIt was even featured in a scene (decorated as a circa-'60's retail store) in 2007's "American Gangster".
According to Cinema Treasures the Claremont closed in 1933.
