☞ BESPOKE: Zodiac Signs in the Park

Decorative cast iron often come in unexpected places as we soon discovered when walking by Montiefiore Park in West Harlem.  This small green space by West 138th Street and Broadway occasionally has temporary public art sculptures installed but there is a a zodiac sewer cap in the center pathway that is a more permanent fixture. An engraved compass is also part of the functional piece of artwork and this all alludes to a time where even the most basic object was designed with beauty in mind.

  1. I like the observation, a time where even the most basic object was designed with beauty in mind. Harlem has a wealth of architectural beauty from this time, from the ornate ironwork to the portico doorways that are slowly being restored making Harlem a very special part of Manhattan.
