☞ REVIVE: An Updated Facade at 123rd Street
There only two townhouses left on the small block just west of FDB/8th Avenue at 123rd Street and one of them had been going under a renovation in the past year or so. The top photo shows the ornate facade before it was covered up by scaffolding and we took the lower photo a couple of weeks back to show the end result. We are note quite sure if developers are being cheap about restoring a building or if the concept is that the new look still has a classic feel to it but is more updated. Thoughts?

Tacky and out of context. Going the way of the rest of the city, unfortunately. Looks like they're trying to bring a picket fence from the suburbs to Harlem. Keep your fences in the 'burbs; bring back the stately cornice and arched window treatments.
ReplyDeleteWhat pity........missed opportunity

ReplyDeleteActually it does maintain somewhat of a classic look by putting those modified Juliet balconies in place. And also the windows (I think they're called 3 over 3?) are a nice classic touch as well. While I have a keen appreciation for a nice cornice on a buiilding roof-line I think this style works as well, well not quite as well as what was there previously but at least the building doesn't have that unfinished look. Some developers when renovating a building forget about a cornice altogether and its as though they are saying design isn't important. And as well all know, it is.
ReplyDeleteAnother ugly building with no architectural
ReplyDeleteproportion on the block.
