A photo from 1928 shows the Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Eastern Studios which was over at East 126th Street and Second Avenue. This area used to have a large casino but by the early 20s, film companies started moving in. As recent as the late 50s, a company called Filmway Studios was located on the spot which now has mainly parking lots but developers currently want to build a large commercial complex in the area. We kind of think making this a film studio section of Harlem once more would actually be more interesting and help anchor any new construction at this location. Apparently a major corporate tenant does not appear to have been secured for the project planned at this section just north of 125th Street since it has been about 4 years since talks started about developing the land: LINK

Filmways created a lot of television shows during the medium's Golden Age. (Sadly, long since passed away.)
ReplyDeleteInterior scenes for Midnight Cowboy and The Godfather and many, many others were all filmed at Filmway Studios at 246 East 127th St.
ReplyDeleteWould be great to have a film studiio built on that site again, instead of luxury apartments.
