QUESTION: WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF CONVENT AVENUE?
Convent Avenue is one of the most notable boulevards of West Harlem but how did the prestigious path get its name? There are a lot of religious institutions in the area so one might be surprised that the original namesake building was demolished sometimes in the middle of the last century. Convent of the Sacred Heart had established itself in Harlem back in 1840 and eventually became a part of City College's campus on the south end by 130th Street. Even with its historic significance, the powers that be did not deem it important enough to maintain and this part of Harlem's history remains vague to the average citizen today. Check out the original photo of the convent in our past post: LINK
