REVIVE: A WAREHOUSE ON WEST 129TH STREET
We walked by 129th and Amsterdam yesterday and took the above photo of the mysterious barn or warehouse that is located just east of the avenue. This structure in Manhattanville probably has something to do with the old brewery just a block south that is now called the Mink Building. Prohibition shut down the beer production in the area in the early 20th century and the industry never recovered afterwards. This would be a great spot space for public events if restored properly but whoever owns the building appears to be in no hurry to sell. Does anyone have additional history on the space?

I think this building is owned by the Metropolitan Opera and they store sets, props, etc. sometimes the back door is open on the street behind and you can peak in. It looks quite fantastic.
ReplyDeleteA 1916 map from the NYPL archives shows this as being owned by the "Third Ave R.W. Co." Perhaps a barn for trolleys or other rail components?
ReplyDeleteThe Met for many years leased the space for storing sets. Recently moved to another facility. Met also has set storage warehouses in Newark, NJ and Newburgh, NY.
