REMEMBER: AN ELEVATED TRAIN VIEW CIRCA 1920

Who can guess this rare Harlem vantage point taken in 1920 by one of the elevated train tracks?  One of  the major clues in the background was actually missing for the past decade but now has miraculously returned.  A more dramatic current photo will be posted later on today.

ANSWER: Park Avenue looking west on 125th Street at the Metro North Station.  The Corn Exchange building will be fully restored in the coming month or so and the notable rooftop has now been reconstructed after a fire destroyed the top levels in the 90s.  Since the building is an official New York City landmark, all of the restorations had to be contextual within the original design concept so the once dismantled building is having a second chance a century later.  Check out the final renderings in our past post: LINK

  1. Looking west towards 125th Street and Park Avenue and current Metro-North station. A sad reminder that the restored Corn Exchange Bldg will be a poor echo of the original, esp. the roof line.

  4. You should see the amount of copper they're adding to the building's facade... It's tremendous!!

  5. I'm just glad that SOMETHING remains of this part of 125th street. Sadly the new buildings that are replacing the old are no where near the quality of those they've torn down.
