We received another tip from a pretty reliable source that the storefront at 547 West 142nd Street at the corner of Broadway will definitely be a Starbucks. Some folks mentioned that the owner of Anchor Wine Bar has this spot planned for a new pizza joint but this is not that location. Neighbors who grew up in the area mentioned that Starbucks did arrive many years ago in Hamilton Heights on the Broadway corridor but the less expensive latin coffee shops in the area had better brew and the demographics did not really want the more pricey commercial option. Now boutique java joints have since then been doing well in this section of West Harlem in recent years so it will be interesting to see if Starbucks does better this time around. Although the Broadway corridor has had past difficulties with the chain, other uptown locations such as 125th Street, 145th Street and FDB have done well in the past decade.
I think they actually have a good location here, it catches the 3-5 block radius well. I heard Anchor was opening up a pizza bar too but in the upper 130's. Also, does anyone know what is going up on the west side of broadway, lower 140's, near Trufo?
ReplyDeleteI think it's a good location, too. The closest competing coffee place is Tanto Dulce but that place is tiny. It would probably be better if it was closer to one of the train stations, though. A lot of foot traffic is going to go north to 145 or south to 135th and not pass by in the mornings.
