REMEMBER: AN AVENUE VIEW CIRCA 1941
Who can guess this street view taken in 1941? Some of the buildings on the main boulevard have been torn down and replaced since then but the major clue is the cluster of distinct townhouses on the side street. Those living a bit further south might be able to figure this one out more easily. An updated photo will be posted later on in the day.
ANSWER: This is the corner of St. Nicholas by 121st Street. Everything still looks the same except for the new construction on the left side of the photo which now has Flame Keepers Hat Club at the lower level. Archival image courtesy NYPL

OK, so I am old enough to remember the chain of dry-cleaners named "Spotless" They were my mom's favorite. So I say this is FDB looking south from West 121st St.
ReplyDeleteI just noticed the horse drawn produce stand, juxtaposed against mechanized transport. I can still remember a man with a horse drawn wagon selling eggs and butter as late as 1967
