REMEMBER: A SOARING VIEW CIRCA 1940
Who can guess the vantage point of this Harlem view taken circa 1940? The right side has largely been altered but some of the landmarks to the left are still still standing except for the nearest building casting the shadow. In the far distance, the International House on the hilltop is another point of reference as far as directions go. Archival image courtesy NYPL
ANSWER: Lenox Avenue looking west on 125th Street. The Whole Foods under construction at the corner replaces a building that was over a 100 years old but a mysterious fire caused the demise of the structure about a decade ago. Old Koch's department store and the former Hotel Theresa are some ofth the other landmarks that are still standing today.

125th street!!!
ReplyDeleteWestward on West 125th Street
ReplyDeleteLook how clean & pristine the streets and sidewalks look
ReplyDeleteI will never forget the wonderful times I had growing up on 125th Street. Rainbow Records was on the left hand side near Lenox. Malcolm X use to preach on the corner near Howard Clothes.
ReplyDeleteOn the left we can see the handsome brick building that occupied the corner up to maybe 2005 where the new wholefoods building is currently under construction.
