After being announced 4 years ago, it appears that the massive Victoria Theater adaptive reuse $143 million project has finally taken off. We walked by the back end of the theater on the 126th Street side last week and saw that the demolition crew on site has been making some major progress.
As can be seen in the rendering, the facade will remain intact but two towers will rise at the back end of the block located just west of 7th Avenue. One will be a hotel and the other will house affordable rental units. As far as the Victoria theater itself goes, the original plan was to have some sort of cultural center present but it is unclear what they will be. A finish date for the 26-story new construction had originally been set for 2015 but that deadline has since come and gone. More details on this dramatic endeavor on 125th Street can be found in our past post: LINK
