ARCHITECTURE: A RESTORED 181ST STREET STATION

The 1 train station in Washington Heights has alway being a decaying marvel with a two story arched ceiling covered in a century of dust but we just noticed that everything has now been polished up.  Cracked tiles encrusted in dirt have all been replaced in the massive dome structure and the majestic ceiling medallions all have a new coat of paint matching the accent colors of the station's signature mosaic pattern.  Grand chandeliers with glowing globes were probably standard back in the day but those fixtures have not been replaced but their presence can be felt with the restored ornamentation.  Standard fluorescent tubes now illuminate this immense station which probably is one of the more unique ones to be found in Manhattan outside of Grand Central.  Some of the elevators to get to the street level are still under repair but it looks like this public transport hub will be the jewel of the heights in the near future.
